The dentist documents existing restorations, identifies areas of concern, evaluates wear patterns, and gives you a complete picture of what is happening in your mouth right now. For patients who have been away from the dentist for years, this step turns vague anxiety about what might be wrong into specific, actionable information.
Full-Mouth X-Rays
X-rays reveal what a visual exam cannot. Decay between teeth. Bone levels around tooth roots. Impacted or unerupted teeth. Existing restorations with secondary decay developing underneath them. Infections that have not yet produced visible symptoms.
Full-mouth X-rays, a full series of bitewing and periapical films, give the dentist the complete structural picture of every tooth and root. Some practices take a limited set of X-rays at new patient visits. Full-mouth X-rays provide significantly more information and are standard at Greenspoint Dental for new patients.
The Professional Cleaning
A professional cleaning, technically called a prophylaxis, removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing cannot reach on their own. This includes hardened tartar along the gumline and in the spaces between teeth.
The hygienist also polishes tooth surfaces, which removes surface staining and creates a smoother surface that is slightly harder for plaque to adhere to. The visit typically ends with a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel.
For patients with significant tartar buildup or early gum disease, a standard cleaning may need to be followed by a deeper procedure called scaling and root planing. The hygienist will let you know if that applies, and we explain what it involves before proceeding.
What Happens After the Exam?
Once the exam and X-rays are complete, the dentist reviews the findings with you and answers questions. If any treatment is recommended, you receive a clear explanation of what it is, why it is recommended, and what it costs, with insurance information if applicable.
